Meeting featuring Hank Gilbert

This Wednesday, October 21, at 6:30 p.m. Hank Gilbert will be joining the St. Edward's Democrats Club for a question and answer session.  Please come to the meeting prepared with questions for Hank.  To learn more about him, visit: http://hankgilbert.com/

Hank Gilbert is a democratic candidate running for Governor of Texas.  Here is a brief overview of his stance on key issues.
  1. Education: believes in reforming the education system, including revising or eliminating standardized testing.
  2. Energy: we can and will do more to accelerate the ongoing shift from coal burning electricity generation to a cleaner mix of advanced solar, wind, geothermal and nuclear.
  3. Insurance Reform: Hank believes not only in an overhaul in Health Insurance Reform, but also in Texas homeowner's insurance, which has the highest rates in the country.
  4. Environment: plans to revamp the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
  5. Economy: wants to invest in infrastructure, which is rapidly deteriorating in Texas.
  6. A Woman's Right to Choose: opposes placing any restrictions or roadblocks on a woman's right to choose, supports scientifically-based sex education in schools, believes Texas should do more to reduce unintended pregnancies, especially in teens.
  7. Second Amendment Rights: will fight for Texans' rights to carry concealed weapons, but does not favor allowing concealed weapons to be carried into the classroom.
  8. Transparency and Inclusiveness in Government: plans to have an administration open to all races, religions, sexual orientations, ages, and economic situations in order to ensure that qualified people of all walks of life are appointed to state board and commissions.
For more information of Hank's stance on current issues, visit http://hankgilbert.com/issues/

Hope to see all of you there on Wednesday night!  Bring a friend.  Light refreshments will be provided.

Bake Sale Tomorrow!

Hi guys, we are having a bake sale tomorrow, so please come and work the table and bring lots of yummy baked goods!  This is the sign-up information I have from the last meeting

10-11
Irma Fernandez
Elizabeth Tuggle
Ryan Lester
Taylor Holden

11-12
Jessica Collins

12-1
Eric Bustes

1-2

2-3
Rebecca Patel

Needless to say, we need at least one person to man the table from 1-2.  We also need more people for 11-12, 12-1, and 2-3, so please at least stop by and stay as long as you can, even if you can't stay for a solid hour!

Also, I have a few people down for bringing baked goods but not staying to man the table:
Michael Nanez-cupcakes
Sarah Records-brownies
Andrew Guerrero-brownies
Patrick Kail-cookies (chocolate chip-pecan)

Please, if you signed up to bring something or just to sit at the table, follow through with these commitments.  We really need everyone to work together to make this bake sale successful.

See you tomorrow!

P.S.  We will be meeting at 2:00 this Friday in Ragsdale.  This will be our first Friday meeting, so please don't forget and bring a friend!

Things to take note of:
  1. Unless there is public outcry, we will be moving our meetings to 2:00pm on Fridays.  Meetings should resume in Ragsdale.
  2. Dues have been set at $20.  These will be required to be submitted in order to be an active member in the club.  This fee also pays for your club t-shirt.  If possible, please bring your money to our meeting next week (I realize next Fri. is Founder's Day, we will be sending out an email about a different meeting time).  Also, comment on this blog with your t-shirt size or, if you don't want everybody to know it, email it to me at jschrau@stedwards.edu
  3. If you have ideas for the video contest, email them to Garrett at thisisgarrett@gmail.com or comment on this blog.
  4. We need as many people as possible to contribute items toward the bake sale.  We will send around a sign-up sheet during the next meeting so that people can commit to what item they would like to bring (i.e. brownies, cookies, scones, etc).  Even if you cannot actually table, you can still bring items and drop them off!  We will also need people to man the table.  People can sign up for this at the next meeting as well.  Or, if you are unable to make the meeting, comment on this blog or email me.
  5. If you would like to publish on this blog (as in writing articles, essays, comments on current issues, candidates, etc), please email me or comment on this blog with the email address used in your Gmail account included in the content.
